Automation Team
The Automation Team creates the cool part of our business: kiosks, PLC cabinets, camera installations and more. We use industrial components to build automation solutions and integrate our software. Activities can also include:
- Management and inventory of hardware in our test environments and for client projects
- Involvement in selection and purchasing of technical components and parts
- Design (and optimisation) of assemblies

Automation Specialist — Edmonton, Alberta
PSCL are hiring an Automation Specialist to in our project team. You will work as part of our project team to deliver world class control system projects. Your main tasks will include performing detailed control system design, programming and commissioning. To succeed in this role you should have a natural analytical way of thinking , and be able to explain difficult concepts to non-technical users.
The ideal candidate will have a proven track of successfully completing projects on-time and on-budget, as well as provide detailed documentation upon project completion. This person will be a key technical resource and may be responsible for some project management activities. Experience in Oil & Gas, Material Handling (mining, cement, agriculture) or Water/Wastewater industries is a plus.
Responsibilities:
- Automation and controls systems design, specification, programming, simulation, testing and start-up assistance
- Having strong technical skills, and a full understanding of the needs of the customer
- Being able to effectively communicate with external clients and internal teams to deliver project documentation
Knowledge, skills and abilities:
- Engineering Technology Diploma – Instrumentation/Electrical
- 5+ years associated work experience
- Experience with PLC logic, and programming with any of the following PLCs: Allen Bradley, Modicon, GE Fanuc, Siemens, AutomationDirect, Omron, etc.
- Experience with HMI or SCADA programming and configuration of any of the following software packages: Wonderware, Rockwell, GE Cimplicity, Siemens, etc.
- Experience with P&IDs, panel design and layout, bill of materials, instrument datasheets, control narratives, and wiring schematic capabilities
- Experience troubleshooting and tracing electrical circuits
- Practical application ability with Microsoft Office and Visio
- Basic understanding of AC & DC electrical systems
- Able to collaborate in project team setting and engage in creative and critical thought
- Experienced in ISA technical standards
- Experienced with CEC / NEC
- Experienced with AutoCad
- Detailed analytical abilities
- Strong experience in factory, and user acceptance testing
- Experience creating detail reports and giving presentations
- A track record of following through on commitments
- Excellent planning, organizational and time management skills
- A history of leading and supporting successful projects
Education:
Education: Engineering Technology Diploma
Professional Designation: C.ET., P.Tech.(Eng.), P.Eng, E.I.T. an asset
Experience:
- 5 years of associated work experience an asset
- Experience in Oil and Gas, Material Handling (Mining, Cement, Agriculture), or Water/Wastewater industries is an asset
Physical Requirements:
- Work in an office environment, and at client sites
- Usually work a standard 40-hour work week but does require some flexibility in work hours
- Must be able to travel within and outside Canada – valid passport required – up to 50% of time
- Client sites are industrial by nature therefore PPE is required as well as adaptation to the conditions and responsibilities of industrial plant environment
